Divorce as a Movie

Divorce wouldn’t be so bad if it just felt like getting to the end of a movie you really enjoyed. Even if you are bummed the movie is over, you have the positive memories and the ways it made you feel and you can share the stories and learn from the characters and talk about it with other people and feel connected.

Instead, for me at least, divorce feels more like a movie I was working on (for ten years) that never got off the ground. Or maybe it did, but it was definitely not the movie I set out to create. Were there some really good scenes? Of course. But overall it didn’t manage to come together in a way that worked – it just left me wishing I could go back and try to create something better. Now I find myself disappointed (and heartbroken) that I invested in that particular project and put so much time and effort and heart into something that I can’t look at with pride and that I don’t think represents (or brought out) the best of who I am.

Anyway, I do not recommend, and would give divorce a very shitty score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sex on the Brain Episode 6: Polyamory

Our sixth episode is on the topic of polyamory – the practice of having more than one romantic relationship at a time with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved. This episode features candid and personal conversations between Amory Jane and her guests (Kevin Patterson of Poly Role Models and educator Annamarie Stockwell), from one polyamorous person to another. They talk about the real pros and cons of ethical non-monogamy, the heartbreaks, and how others have reacted to their non-traditional relationship styles. They also talk about intersectionality in polyamory (and about how intersectional feminism is often lacking in the media and polyamory communities in general).

Sex on the Brain Episode 5: Sex Toy Bonanza!

The Sex Toy Bonanza episode of Sex on the Brain with Amory Jane is finally here! In this extra special (and hilarious) 90 minute episode, sex toy experts EpiphoraDirty Lola, and Amory Jane drink mimosas and go through Epiphora’s bag of unique sex toys. They also swap stories, offer shopping ideas for the holidays, talk about sex toy classics (like the Njoy Pure Wand and Magic Wand) and definitely don’t hold back on which sex toys (and companies) leave something to be desired.

Episode 5 is chock full of snark and silliness and is a fun listen for sex toy connoisseurs, retailers, and reviewers, as well as those who just want the inside scoop on the wide and often weird world of sex toys!

Thank you

Up until a couple of weeks ago, I thought I had made a really stupid choice to leave a great position at a great company (where I made a living wage) to follow my passions and become a (mega poor) full-time Sex Educator Extraordinaire. Lately my risks have seemed a little more like they are paying off though. I’m getting booked all over the place, selling out classes and shows, getting thousands of downloads on the podcast, and finally feeling more like a part of the community.

With the depression and anxiety I felt after the election, I almost gave up on my dream. I didn’t have to energy to actually do it, but I thought about looking for a “regular person job.” Then, and I don’t know exactly what happened or how, a couple days ago I broke open and a lot of grief rushed out. Then energy to move forward and kick some ass settled in. It’s like I got a giant slap in the face, but I am not complaining.

Anyway, thank to all of you supportive wonderful people who encouraged me to keep going. I’m not very good at being my own cheerleader, but your combined forces showed so much belief in me that maybe I finally started believing it too.

xoxo,

Amory Jane

Resistance & Connection through Performance Art

Whoopee! A Sex-Positive Variety Show has been an idea I have had in my brain for a while. Portland is a city full of many talented artists, musicians, dancers, comedians, and performers of all types. It is also a city that is generally very sex-positive and open-minded. So, I wanted to find a way of joining communities together and showcasing sex-positive Portlanders expressing themselves through music, comedy, dance, storytelling, and other performance art.

Since Whoopee! was conceived a while back, I admit that I didn’t think much about if or how the results of the election would impact the show. However, these past few days have been full of heavy emotions. Our community is reeling. Many of us feel fear, rage, sadness, panic, and helplessness.

We already know that even with more legal rights and protections for LGBTQI citizens over the past few years, queer people are still being discriminated against and assaulted. We know trans women (especially trans women of color) are still being murdered. We know that even with a black president in office, black lives are being ended by state sanctioned violence. We know that, to the most powerful people, money matters more than anything – more than the environment, more than clean drinking water, more than innocent lives.

Even though we recognize that we have made major progress in some areas, we also know that there has been a lot of hateful and scared pushback. Under a Trump presidency, who knows how life will be in the United States.

With all of these thoughts running through our heads, it is a difficult time for many people right now. Yet, I see my community reaching out to each other, offering support, banning togetprotest-155927_960_720her, protesting, raising voices and raising funds. I see anger (and I share in those feelings of anger) and I see it getting channeled into resistance. It is inspiring at a time where we all need as much inspiration as possible…and that got me thinking more about my variety show, and how perhaps it could play a role in giving folks another way to express defiance and feel connected to one another as a community. Music and art has always played a role in politics and protest, and has helped people cope, and I want to provide a platform for that locally.

So, I am still holding auditions 11/13-11/19 for Whoopee! and am still looking for sex-positive entertainers (storytellers, musicians, dancers, comedians, poets, performance artists, etc.) for the show. However, I also encourage other people to audition who feel called to express who they are in a place that is safe and supportive. This is especially true if your voice is one that has been historically silenced and/or that you fear will try to be silenced more in our near future. Whoopee! started out as a fun way to show off Portland’s sex-positivity and diverse talents, but now it is also an event for our communities to join together and be unapologetically ourselves in the wake of everything that has happened this year.

I read this quote on Outsports after the Orlando nightclub shooting in June and I find myself coming back to it now:

We cannot let fear overcome our community’s collective courage. We must continue to use our own voices and our own stories to inspire courage in one another. Every time we choose to be our truest, most visible selves, we shine more light on the darkness.

To be part of the show, please email me at amoryjane.edu@gmail.com

If you would like to attend the show, tickets may be purchased here.

A limited number of free and sliding scale tickets are available for those who would like to attend but do not have the funds. Please email Amory Jane to ask about discounted tickets. For those who do have the funds, extra tickets may also be bought during the check out process and will be donated to those can’t afford to attend. Thank you. <3
